The Prospective Payment System (PPS) is a reimbursement method in which a Medicare payment is made based on a predetermined, fixed amount: the PPS rate. Different Prospective Payment Systems are used for reimbursement to different services.
A proposed rule that would establish FY 2018 Medicare prospective payment system (PPS) rates for inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) services was recently published by the CMS. If adopted, IRF PPS payments would increase by 1.0% overall for fiscal year 2018 compared to 2017.
