Every year the U.S. News & World Report ranks the best hospitals in the country. This year’s rankings—based on a comparison of 4,500 medical centers across 25 specialties, procedures and conditions—was released on August 14th.
In order to qualify for consideration, a hospital had to meet any of the four following standards:
- Be a teaching hospital
- Be affiliated with a medical school
- Have at least 200 beds set up and staffed
- Have at least 100 beds and offer at least 4 of the 8 advanced technologies: PET/CT scanner, precision radiation therapies, etc.
Of the initial pool of hospitals, 2,264 met one of these four criteria.
The Honor Roll: 20 Top Hospitals
The Honor Roll, the 20 hospitals with the “highest rankings and the greatest number of high performing procedure and condition ratings,” is as follows:
Best Regional Hospitals
For most treatments, patients don’t need to go to an Honor Roll hospital. Which is why U.S. News also recognized 520 U.S. hospitals—about 1 out of every 10 medical centers— on their Best Regional Hospitals list.
158 hospitals performed well enough to be ranked nationally in one or more of the 16 specialties analyzed by U.S. News.
